Powering Together Privacy Notice

We are Centre for Energy Equality LTD, registered in the UK (company number 13530142). We run Powering Together with a number of Project Partners; Cambridge Consultants, Pure Leapfrog, South Yorkshire Housing Association and Energy Friends.

Northern Powergrid, the trial sponsor, is the trading name of Northern Powergrid (Northeast) plc (Registered No: 2906593) and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc (Registered No: 4112320). Registered Office: Lloyds Court, 78 Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 6AF. Registered in England and Wales. Your data will be processed in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.3

The trial is jointly managed by both Centre for Energy Equality LTD and Northern Powergrid, who act as joint controllers of your personal data. This means both organisations will have access to and decide how your information is collected, used, and stored. We are registered with the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) under number ZB469793. Your data will be processed in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Centre for Energy Equality are responsible for the day-to-day running of the Powering Together energy community trials, management of participant consent, and handling of incentives and personal data during the trial.

Northern Powergrid are responsible for the successful delivery and general oversight of the overall Community DSO Innovation Project sponsoring this trial amongst others in the Northeast and Yorkshire. This includes ensuring any personal data processed aligns with the requirements of the overarching Community DSO Project.

This notice explains how your personal information will be managed under the Powering Together Project.

What information we collect and why

The information collected depends on how you use the services delivered under the trial.

  • What is collected:

    • Your first name, last name, email address, phone number, property address, and Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN)

    • Bank details, to pay you your rewards during the trial.

    • Smart meter data and other data from energy assets in your home (e.g., batteries or EV chargers).

    • Your opinions, feedback, and survey responses regarding your experiences with the project.

    • Photo of an Energy bill and an Image of a Photo Id to allow us to connect to your smart meter data.

  • Why it is collected:

    • To optimise your energy usage during the trial, including managing energy assets in your home.

    • To calculate the rewards we can provide you for smart energy usage.

    • To carry out research and analysis on energy use.

    • To operate our applications and provide you with customer support.

    • Analyse feedback and survey responses to evaluate and improve the project. This data will be anonymised when included in research reports or publications.

 

  • Legal reason: your freely given, informed, and unambiguous consent is required for project participation. You can withdraw your consent at any time.

  • How long it is kept: Centre for Energy Equality LTD will keep your data for 2 years.  Northern Powergrid keep and securely store your during the project delivery period of the Community DSO project.

  • Data will be aggregated and anonymised at the conclusion of the project to ensure you cannot be identified in any published results.

 Understanding our legal reasons for using your data

Your personal data can only be used when the law allows. This is called a "legal basis."

  • Consent: You have given your permission to use your data for a specific purpose.

  • Legitimate Interests: Your data is data for business interests, as long as it does not override your privacy rights.

  • Performance of a Contract: Your data is used to provide a service you've asked for or to prepare for a contract with you. If you don't provide the necessary information, this might mean a specific service cannot be provided.

  • Explicit Consent: For sensitive "special category data" (like health data), you give clear and specific permission for this to be used.

Who your information is shared with

The success of the trial relies on the support of certain project partners and other organisations. Your personal data may be shared with them but only when this is strictly necessary. Where this happens, agreements in place to ensure they protect your data.

We will share your data with the following partners and providers:

  • TNEI Services LTD

  • Lane Clark & Peacock LLP (trading as LCP Delta)

  • Cambridge Consultants LTD

  • North East Energy Friends CIC

  • Pure Leapfrog

  • South Yorkshire Housing Association

  • Hilderbrand

  • Enode

 

All these partners are based in the UK and are bound to comply with UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  When we share your data with them, they also become responsible for protecting it. We ensure that any transfers of your data outside the UK comply with all legal requirements and have the same level of protection as in the UK.

Anonymised data may also be shared with third parties and published, including outside the European Union, in accordance with GDPR requirements.

Anonymised survey responses may also be shared with project partners and included in publications, but participants will not be identifiable.

Sometimes, there may be a legal requirement to share your information with other organisations, like the police. We might not always be able to tell you when this happens, but we only share it if the law allows.

Smart meter data

A third-party provider, Hilderbrand is used to provide smart meter data access via an in-home consumer access device. How we protect your information

Appropriate technical and organisational measures will be used to keep your information safe from unauthorised access, loss, or damage. If your data is sent outside the UK, we make sure it has the same level of protection.

Your data protection rights

You have important rights over your personal data under UK GDPR:

  • Be informed: Know how your data is used.

  • Access: Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.

  • Correction (Rectification): Ask us to correct any inaccurate or incomplete information.

  • Deletion (Erasure): Ask us to delete your personal information in certain situations.

  • Object to processing: object to us using your personal information in certain situations.

  • Restrict processing: Ask us to temporarily stop using your personal information in certain situations.

  • Data portability: Ask us to move your personal information to you or another organisation.

  • Withdraw consent: If we rely on your consent to use your data, you can withdraw it at any time.

We usually respond to these requests within one month.
